The Driver

Frank Hammette, aka "The Duck"

The Duck first took up racing the beginning of 1997. The bug bit After attending the Laguna Seca Historic Races in August of 1996. At that time the Duck did not know the difference between Fangio and Richard Petty,  A four day school at Road Atlanta convinced him that racing was a sport which could be enjoyed by those old enough to shave, and a three day course at The Bob Bondurant School convinced him that open wheel Formula Fords was the only car to fit his petite (5'7") and delicate body.  A five day course at the Windfield escole de pilotage in France convinced him of the benefits of  French cooking.  (The excellent instruction was also a benefit).

His first car was a Royale RP16 Formula Ford. This 1972 car was purchased for Vintage Racing.  After the first two vintage races the beginning of 1997, The Duck couldn't wait until the next vintage race, so he bought a 1979 Crossle Formula Ford  to enter in the SCCA Southeastern ' SARRC' series for club fords.  Soon one SCCA Club Ford was not enough.  A spare would be needed to insure the least amount of DNS and DNF 's.   A second Crossle was purchased in January of 1998 along with a two car trailer to allow two cars to be taken to  distant tracks such as Mid Ohio and Sebring Fla.

The 1997 schedule included 4 vintage races and 11 SCCA Regional Races. The 1998 schedule included 3 vintage races , 13 SCCA Regional Races, and two SCCA National Races.  Although the older pre 1984 Formula Fords are raced in the Club Ford class at regional SCCA races, it is possible to enter these older cars in National Races in the newer, and somewhat swifter Formula Ford class.

The 1999 schedule is ambitious, including SCCA Regional Races, and SCA National Races. You can find the complete schedule (with results if available) at the schedule and results link above. If qualified to do the National SCCA Runoffs at Mid Ohio in October, you can bet the Duck will be there, probably with the only 1970s car on the grid.

A recent purchase was made of a second vintage car, a 1970 Titan Mark 6A. This car will be used for vintage racing at the tracks in the northern part of the country.
